About & Expertise

A/Prof Athavale is a dual-trained Nephrologist and Clinical Pharmacologist. He completed medical studies at the University of Sydney, and undertook specialist training across multiple sites, including Concord, Royal Prince Alfred, Liverpool and St Vincent’s Hospitals.

When not working, he enjoys spending time with his wife, two young children and dog Peanut.

Nephrology

Expertise in all facets of nephrology, including glomerulonephritis, diabetic kidney disease, hypertension, kidney stone prevention, and the management of dialysis and kidney transplant recipients. He has admitting rights at Gosford Public Hospital, Gosford Private Hospital and Macquarie University Hospital.

Clinical Pharmacology

Expertise in quality use of medicines. A/Prof Athavale currently advises the Clinical Excellence Commission (NSW Health) on drugs and therapeutics. He is a member of the Advanced Training Committee with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and facilitates FRACP physician examinations.

General Medicine

A/Prof Athavale is the Head of Department of General Medicine at Gosford and Woy Woy Hospitals. He is also the Clinical Director of Perioperative and General Medicine at Macquarie University Hospital.

Research & Teaching

He is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Macquarie University. He is actively involved in medical student education and curriculum development. He has numerous publications in peer-reviewed journals across nephrology and pharmacology. His research focuses on drug pharmacokinetics in acute and chronic kidney disease.
